CHILD 44 – A Brief Review (No Spoilers)

This has made it onto the top 10 films I have ever seen. When searching for the image above, I also came across the fact that the average review for it is very poor, between one and three stars, which initially (and stupidly) shocked me.

This film is truly amazing and or a variety of reasons, but primary amongst them is that it is a very real portrayal of what happens when Political Correctness becomes the ideology of the day. And yes, I really do mean that, and yes, the emphasis on Political Correctness is indeed on Political. But do not be fooled.

What you think is harmless garden variety “political correctness” i.e. you know, just “not being a dick on the Internet” a la Will Wheaton, morphs into exactly what Stalinist Russia was. And it does so with surprising and ferocious speed. But only students of history know this. And who has time to study history eh? The Kardashians are on! And texting my mate! And Watsupsnapplefacebooktwatter status update… Yes. Your Borg-i-zation is complete Earthling.

Until I remember why, it is astonishing to me that a film that is so historically accurate, well acted and that basically only takes very little artistic licence beyond that required for a clear exposition of the ideology of Political Correctness (call it Stalinism if you must, but the current ideology it covers is best exemplified by the Social Justice Wankers that want to cow, bend and subjugate all the thoughts, of all the people, to their tyrannical overmanned groupthink) received such poor reviews.

But it is only astonishing for a brief moment because I still struggle with the sad reality that clearly, clearly, I was dropped off here at birth, in the care of Terran parents, oversee-ers, in order to keep me from my God-given birthright of being the most powerful Martian Warlord in the history of Martian Warlords. And to keep me from my spaceship. Bastards.

Once you factor that in however, and I remember that despite the basic humanoid forms, what I am really dealing with here on your planet is a bunch of primates barely above the civilisation of Bonobos on cocaine, it all makes perfect sense.

You see, there are many underlying levels to this film.

You could look at it as just a grim Noir set in Soviet Russia, and at that level it does indeed all that a Noir does. It’s grim. It’s harsh, BUT…and it is an important, a pivotal but, there is heroism! And heroism, you see, cannot be permitted in the current political environment, don’t you know comrade. You are not special. And neither is anyone else. All there is is Nihilism unto death (yes, that’s a pun for the literate. Come on… I know amongst the 3 Russian hackers that frequent this site one of you has some literary backbone!). Which explains the low-star reviews.

You could watch it as an indictment of Political Correctness. Of Groupthink. Of Conform to the overarching view of the State (of Paradise Comrade, of Utopia on Earth) or be crushed. You could see it as the road that globally, we are being herded towards on a daily basis. Dissent will not be tolerated. We-You are borg. Resistance is futile. You will submit. You will say the correct phrases. You will not speak out of turn. You will be fired and prevented from earning a living if your groupthink is not properly aligned with he good think of today comrade. And pretty soon, you will be arrested and jailed and then killed.

And in this it is the most brilliant film I have seen. Because it is human sized. It is personal. It is so gritty you get dirt in your eyes watching it. You can taste it. And yet…and yet… that human hope, seen nowhere on the harsh Earth, but subtle, hidden, like a covered flame, glows inside…

It is not making any huge statements about politics. Or about Communism. Or Russia. Or the Soviet state. It is merely, talking about human beings. About humanity. About the human spirit. And this, it seems, judging by the vultures that pass for film critics today, cannot be permitted. You are to eat only calorie-free “food”. No feeding of the soul. Bread and circus only. A diet of vapid entertainment by following the gossip that farts out of the fat ass of celebrities, or inane slapstick, or what is essential urban fantasy of the most fantastic kind. And I don’t mean that in a good way. We cannot, perchance, see an intelligent film. A film that educates, that inspires, that makes you grow. That could shed some light on your mind and soul. Can’t be having that.

Or, and this is what in my mind made it even more brilliant:

You could watch it as a testament to all that is good in human beings, despite their flaws, their weaknesses, their ugliness and the impossible harshness that this cruel world imposes on them all.

Set in an atheist country, and without any hint at spirituality whatever, nevertheless, what comes through this film most for me (and it is something I wonder if I would have seen before my own evolution in that regard) is the subtle, permanent, invisible, web of light, that underlies everything. So faint we are unaware of it even when we sleep, perhaps catching a whisp of it only in half-remembered dreams that fade like mist even before we open our eyes.

I also think the reviewers, for the most part, individuals who would no doubt be completely unable to realise how historically close to reality this film is, just could not imagine such a reality and found it “unrealistic”. This whilst the very real reality of the Soviet State and what “Paradise” created by the ideologues that want to create the Universal Utopia, is still within living memory.

It is ironic, that Putin, a member of the ex-KGB, and now the leader of Russia, currently gives speeches criticising and pointing out the totalitarianism being imposed on the world by the American globalist elite and their anglo-American concerns. Only some 60 years have passed, and the very perpetrators of that kind of mass-murdering frenzy that is the “paradise” of the Atheist Ideologues are turning around and trying to warn the rest of the planet, that, trying to create so-called “paradise on Earth” is the way to Hell.

Don’t take my word for it though. Go see this film yourself. And remember Comrade:

There is no murder in Paradise

“In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is…in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”
